“Spiritual warfare” may excite or intimidate you or maybe you think it is irrelevant in 21st Century modern and comfortableAustralia.  Whether we accept or like it, humankind is caught in a cosmic battle of eternal significance between God and His angels on one side against Satan and his demons.

There are extremes to avoid.  One is to think there is a demon in every corner and blame Satan for our bad choices or everything that goes wrong.  Another is to be so afraid of Satan and demons that we don’t fight or naively hope they’ll go away.  Or we might be ignorant of his schemes.

To fight the good fight and overcome darkness we need a Biblical, holistic and balanced perspective that translates into action.  This series will be more like a survey of the Bible or the bird’s-eye view rather than looking through a microscope on a few verses.

What does the Old Testament teach us about light vs. darkness? 

God is the Creator who is sovereign, holy, light and all-knowing.  Satan was an angel, created by God, who rebelled against God.  Though more powerful than human beings, Satan is limited, does not know everything and can be at one place at a time.  Because Satan hates God he hates human beings and doing his utmost to destroy them.  In Genesis, Exodus, Job, and Daniel we read that Satan is evil and cunning.  He sows doubts and deceives with half-truths and false religions.  He is the Accuser who constantly seeks to drive a wedge between God and human beings.  He distracts with pleasures or success.  He incites division among God’s people.   Satan knows he is defeated but still seeks to cause havoc

While we need to be aware of Satan and his schemes, our focus must be on God.  We must be amazed by God, know Him intimately, trust and worship Him.   Darkness cannot snuff out light.  God has given us His authority but we need to exercise it to overcome.  Peter and James, who were well versed with the Old Testament, summarized the keys to overcoming – Submit to God, resist the devil in community and he will flee.
